Adjustment Techniques

Atlas Orthogonal

Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic is a specialty within the chiropractic field working with the first vertebra. It is a painless and safe spinal correction.

The Atlas Orthogonal Program was developed with specificity in mind. A Board Certified Atlas Orthogonist uses special X-ray views to determine the extent and direction of spinal misalignment. This analysis from the X-rays determines the vector or direction to adjust the spinal segment.

A mechanical impulse is imparted to a metal stylus by means of a spring loaded plunger. The impulse imparted to the stylus by the plunger excites a compressional wave in the stylus.  At the patient-stylus interface, a portion of this wave energy is transmitted into the patient. The amount of percussive energy exerted is 6 lbs of pressure per square inch. With this light force the 2 ounce Atlas bone is then gently restored to its normal position.

Atlas Orthogonal (AO) chiropractors engage in 200 hours of additional study over and above their university degree(s), which focuses on the upper cervical spine. They are then awarded a Board Certification in Atlas Orthogonal technique from Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic (USA).

The patient feels absolutely no discomfort.

Activator Methods Technique®

Activator Methods Technique® is a gentle, low-force program of chiropractic care. It has been safely used for over 35 years to benefit people with a wide range of health problems.

In the late 1960’s, this revolutionary chiropractic technique was developed to improve safety and comfort for chiropractic patients.

Since then, the technique has grown to be the most widely-used “low-force” chiropractic technique in the world.

How does the Activator® Adjusting Instrument work?
To address spinal joint dysfunction, we use an instrument called the Activator®. This unique hand-held instrument was scientifically designed to give you a very specific, “low-force” adjustment.

The Activator® instrument delivers a controlled, light and fast thrust, without causing undue strain to patients.
Activator® adjustments are so quick and controlled, your body’s muscles are less likely to resist, allowing for a more precise and exact adjustment.
One of the unique features of the Activator Technique® is that we can zero in on the exact area of the body that is causing your health problems.
The Activator Technique® incorporates the latest advances in orthopedic, neurological and chiropractic examinations along with a unique system of administering spinal adjustments. Using the Activator® analysis and the Activator® instrument, your chiropractor can help restore spinal balance safely and comfortably.
Doctors of Chiropractic receive extensive training in the Activator Technique®. This method is also one of the most scientifically researched techniques in chiropractic. Patients all over the world are benefiting from the ease and precision of this unique method of chiropractic care. Discover how the Activator Technique® can work for you.

Thompson Drop Technique

The main difference between this technique and others is the type of table that is used. This table has different “drop away” sections. There is one for the head/neck area, upper back, mid back, low back and pelvis. Each section has tension controls that are adjusted according to the patient’s weight and size. The section is then “cocked” so that when the thrust of the adjustment is delivered, the corresponding section of the table drops along with it. Usually the patient hears the noise from the table, and may or may not hear “popping” sound from the adjustment. There are usually 3 quick low force adjustments with the drops. According to Dr. Zemelka, author of the Segmental Drop Adjusting Manual used at Palmer College of Chiropractic, “The reasoning is based on Newton’s Law of Motion, in that when two objects fall through space the energy generated in object number one is transferred to the second object during the drop. Therefore, the force induced by the chiropractor’s thrust into the joint space is enhanced with the drop mechanism.” Patients seem to find this type of adjustment quite comfortable.

Diversified

Diversified Technique is the classic chiropractic technique, developed by D.D. Palmer, DC. and taught in all chiropractic colleges. The focus is on restoring normal biomechanical function to the spine, and correction of subluxation. In addition, Diversified methods have been developed to adjust extremity joints, like knees, ankles and wrists, allowing for beneficial applications in treating sports injuries. Diversified adjusting of the spine uses specific lines of drives for all manual thrusts, allowing for specificity in correcting mechanical distortions of the spine. X-rays and case histories are used in analysis and diagnosis. No instruments are used in the adjusting procedure. Motion palpitation (moving parts of the spine while the doctor feels for “stuck” spots) and hands-on techniques are used to deliver a deeper thrust, which makes an osseous (popping) sound as the adjustment is given. Most patients might recognize this technique from the positions they are in when they get adjusted. Usually the neck is adjusted while laying on their back on the table, and the low back is adjusted while they are face down on the table. A table with drops may also be used with this technique

Flexion Distraction

Flexion-Distraction is a gentle, non-force adjusting procedure that works with the body’s natural design to aid it in healing, especially for disc problems. Dr. Cox developed a special table for performing the technique. This table is used to apply a distraction spinal manipulation adjustment. Flexion/distraction manipulation decompresses the disc by applying a gentle stretch or traction to the lower spine, usually in a series of repetitive slow movements without quick movements or thrusts. While the spine is being stretched, it allows water and other nutrients to enter the dehydrated disc to help with repair. The procedure is often used for people with disc problems, but can also be used for non-disc causes of low back pain, such as facet syndrome, spondylolisthesis, sprain/strain, scoliosis, transitional vertebra, sacroiliac subluxation, and stenosis. Studies show that more than two-thirds of patients report excellent to good improvement with a typical rehabilitation program of 12 treatments.

Kinesio Taping® Method

The Kinesio Taping Method can be used for a variety of ailments from headaches to foot pain and everything in between. Kinesio taping is a technique used to give support and stability to your joints and muscles without affecting circulation and range of motion. It is also used for preventive maintenance, edema and pain management. Kinesio Taping exhibits its efficacy through the activation of neurological and circulatory systems. This method basically stems from the science of Kinesiology, hence the name “Kinesio”.

The Kinesio Taping Method is a technique based on the body’s own natural healing process. Developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase nearly 25 years ago in Japan, Kinesio taping has become the gold standard for therapeutic rehabilitative taping. This method has become increasingly popular amongst PTs, ATCs, OTs, DCs, MTs and MDs because of its effective, safe and easy-to-use properties. The Kinesio Taping Method allows the individual to receive the therapeutic benefits 24 hours a day. It was designed to be the approximate thickness and elasticity of skin and can be worn three to five days at a time, even withstanding long runs, swims or showers.
